The more I work with riders, the more I realise that race teams and Motocross/Mountain Biking families neglect one of the most important parts of racing: mental toughness and a confident race attitude. The racers thoughts and feelings determine their ability to perform up to one’s physical potential on race day.
If you could work on your mind as much as you work on your body (hope so) and bike , you will definitely start have more chances to step on the highest step of the podium.
JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN’T SEE IT, IT DOESN’T MEAN THAT ISN’T THERE! Did I already mention that?!!
Mental toughness is the ability to stay focused on what matters during the race time, but also the ability to overcome adversity due to an injury or during a series of unsuccessful races etc.
Confidence is the birth child of experience and supportive environment.
Now both are by products of the Practice Mindset and Race Mindset.
There must be balance between the two mindsets :
In the practice mindset, you work on technique, improve your riding skills in corners, train the body off the track to get stronger etc, over and over again – systematically.
In the practice mindset you develop the ability to do the basics right – AT ALL TIMES. This is what separate an ELITE rider from a normal rider.
The race mindset allows you to race your best and is necessary for peak performance. In the race mindset, you should be able to perform naturally and instinctively. And in order to achieve that , you must nail the practice mindset.
And guess what! If you nail the practice mindset, your confidence will be increased , you’re ability to make the split second decision will be increased, you’re ability to regroup your thoughts will be increased.
Mind, Body and Machine should work in balance in order to achieve greater success. What do you do for that?
